Spring Break trip

Info for Spring 2008 trip

Do you really want to go home for spring break? Wouldn't you rather do
something fun? Then come on the Habitat spring break trip. We'll be going
on a joint trip to Mississippi with Livingston CARES to help relieve the
Gulf Coast after the still widespread hurricane damage. This is a great
opportunity to help people, make some cool friends, and have a new
experience.

Here are some of the logistics: The group will be taking a bus there, so
transportation is arranged. Though the ride is 23 hours, it is cheap and a great way to get to know the people you will be working with. 3 meals a day are provided, and facilities with beds and showers. You will be staying in Habitat village, a community of volunteers. The work, during the day, is varied, ranging from construction (drywall, framing, etc) to demolition (last year, I got to sledgehammer a toilet and bathtub).

The cost for all this is $315. It sounds like a pretty good deal to me, for transportation, lodging, and food.

If you want to go on the trip, stop by in College Union Room 353 to pick up a packet. Importantly, the form and $100 deposit are due by NOVEMBER 7, so don't wait too long.

Anyone can go on the trip, whether they are in Habitat or not. So bring as many friends as you want. If you have any questions, please email habitat@geneseo.edu and I will forward the email to our infinitely capable spring break coordinators.

What is the Spring Break trip?

Every spring break, members of Geneseo Habitat travel to help communities in need. In March 2007, nine of our members travelled to Arlington, Virginia to work on houses Habitat for Humanity International was renovating there.

What is the typical daily schedule for the Spring Break trip?

The schedule varies. Volunteers collaborate with the site supervisor to determine appropriate hours for the jobs, taking into consideration travel time and traffic issues. Volunteers have built houses, renovated houses, and worked at a Habitat for Humanity store: Re-store. Often the site supervisor will provide the volunteers with lunch.

Is there any time to enjoy my spring break?

While working to alleviate poverty does bring joy to the heart, it can wear on the spirit. That's why Habitat volunteers often have a day off to explore their surroundings. Plus, after work the night is yours.

Where do volunteers stay during the spring break trip?

Usually the site supervisor and spring break coordinator will work out accomodations for the volunteers. In the past, most often the volunteers stay in facilities provided by a church.
