Student Development Initiatives

MILES: Daniel Alohan

After the first successful year of the Womens Leadership Institute (WLI), the men on Geneseo’s campus wanted something that will allow them to challenge themselves spiritual, mentally, emotionally, and academically. So, during Fall 2008, under the supervision of Mr. Gabe Iturbides, five student pioneers created what is now known as Men Incorporating Leadership, Empowerment, and Service (M.I.L.E.S.) so that they can accomplish their goal. When they created this group, they envisioned creating a safe space that would allow men to discuss pressing and controversial topics while at the same time developing the necessary professional and social skills needed to thrive in today’s society.

This semester, Fall 2014, MILES has a new advisor, Mr. Bryan Rivera, and a whole new Leadership Team, which includes Andrew Arcese, Mike Austria, Miguel Baique, and Daniel Alohan. This year, we are looking to be more innovative in the way we approach different topics and bring in speakers that come from different backgrounds in the professional world. Something new we are doing is year is a 15-minute team development exercise. Miguel Baique, who is the Team Building Coordinator, comes up with creative ways in which the group can incorporate what true leadership is and it relates to what MILES stands for. Under the supervision of Mr. Bryan Rivera, the new Leadership Team MILES looks forward to having a great year and doing bigger and more involved activities on campus and the surrounding neighborhoods.

*Meetings are on Monday at 4 p.m. in Bailey 246 – any questions/concerns e-mail one of the individuals listed above.
