Optics and Spectroscopy Research at SUNY Geneseo

At SUNY Geneseo, Dr. George Marcus carries out reseasrch in the field of cavity enhanced spectroscopy (CES) to study atmospheric physics.  This work has the potential to measure the concentrations of trace amounts of a variety of gases, soot, and aerosols in the atmosphere.  Marcus and his students have set up a cavity ringdown spectroscopy lab which uses lasers and two highly reflective mirrors to create effective optical pathlenghts in the kilometer range.  These measurements have important application in the study of atmospheric physics and in modeling global climate behavior.
