The SUNY Board of Trustees has bestowed Professor Monica Schneider, a faculty member of the Department of Psychology, with the rank of Distinguished Teaching Professor. Distinguished ranks are the highest honors awarded by SUNY.
Schneider joined the Geneseo faculty in 1995 and was promoted to full professor in 2016. During her tenure, her research has appeared in respected journals, and she has received numerous awards and recognitions, including the SUNY Chancellor's Awards for Excellence in Teaching and Excellence in Faculty Service.
Schneider’s commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging are reflected in her teaching both in and out of the classroom. Her contributions to the scholarship of microaggressions, stereotype threat, and implicit bias have benefited not only the students in her psychology classes but also the faculty, staff, and students more broadly.
As her nomination letter attests, Schneider's course offerings are characterized by a deep commitment to student learning and interests and an unwavering dedication to maintaining high standards. Her commitment to teaching extends far beyond the classroom, as evidenced by the numerous workshops, programs, presentations, and training sessions she has provided to the Geneseo campus community and many other community support organizations.
Schneider's work has not only informed the college's Advancing Cultural Competency Certificate program, but has also served as a catalyst for numerous honors theses, direct studies, and McNair Scholars projects. Her dedication to students and teaching is also demonstrated by mentoring over 200 teaching and research assistants during her tenure at Geneseo.
Her scholarship and teaching have been acknowledged by prestigious awards such as the Association of American Colleges and Universities Bringing Theory to Practice Grant and the Dr. Nuala McGann Drescher Affirmative Action/Diversity Leave award, further affirming her significant contributions to the field.
In nominating Schneider, President Denise Battles and Geneseo colleagues noted that during her almost three decades at Geneseo, Schneider has demonstrated an outstanding record of teaching, mentorship, and research. "Monica Schneider embodies the ideal of a teacher/scholar that Geneseo holds in high esteem," President Battles affirmed in her endorsement of Schneider’s nomination.
