Student Transporation FAQs

Do students need a car?

Many shops, restaurants and banks are within easy walking distance from campus.  In addition there the RTS Livingston Bus Service, which is free to ride with student ID, operates a local daily fixed route that includes the bigger stores (WalMart, Wegmans, etc), a Geneseo-Rochester weekend route (Eastview & Marketplace Malls, the Public Market, Memorial Art Gallery, RIT, etc), an Express Shopper local route to help expediate shopping needs, and the Late Knight Express for local late night transportation on weekends.  Taxis and car services, county bus routes (also free to ride with student ID), free shuttles to and from the airport/bus/train before and after each break and the College Express Bus to downstate locations around breaks and on select weekends.  Our urban and international students function nicely without having cars, but it is a decision for each family to make.  If you do decide to bring a car to campus be sure to register it with Parking Services to receive a parking permit for the appropriate parking lots.

What is the RTS Livingston Bus Service?

It is a service that is contracted by SUNY Geneseo and supported by your student transportation fee.  The service is operated by RTS Livingston (Regional Transit Service). It is free to ride with student ID, and also open to the public for a nominal fee.

What if the RTS-L schedule doesn't work with my schedule?

There are a couple of other options in getting to the Greater Rochester International Airport, Trailways Bus Terminal, or Amtrak Station. Taxis and car services are always an option. Be sure to get a quote on the final price and what payment methods are accepted before agreeing to anything.  Rochester is about 35 miles North of Geneseo and prices vary between $60.00 and $150.00 one way.

Before and after each break and at the start and end of each semester the Student Association offers free shuttle buses to each of the three destinations. Space is limited, so prior sign up is required through the Student Association office located in the College Union.

Trailways and OurBus have regular routes that stop in Geneseo.
