Campus and community members read key democratic documents

Public readingAmong those reading this week was Interim Provost Paul Schacht, who presented the Seneca Falls Declaration of Sentiments, 1848 and the 19th Amendment to the Constitution, Passed in 1920.

The first week of classes is also Inauguration Week and students, faculty and administrators from the college as well as members of the community have been presenting public readings this week of a variety of key historical democratic documents. The readings also were in celebration of Martin Luther King Jr.’s birthday Jan. 16. Some readings were on Main St. downtown; others were in the Village Courtroom. Participants also passed out copies of the U.S. Constitution.

Readers included Robert Bonfiglio, vice president for student and campus life; Geneseo Mayor Richard Hatheway; Sasha Miller ’17, president of Students Against Social Injustice; Bryan Somar ’19, vice president of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee; Tim Hayes, superintendent of Geneseo Central School District; Paul Schacht, interim provost and professor of English; Jim DeCamp from the Veteran of Foreign Wars Post 5005; Jennifer Katz, professor of psychology; Will Wadsworth, Village of Geneseo town supervisor; Mary Rutigliano ‘19, village trustee; Kathy Mapes, associate professor of history; Meredith Drake, Geneseo author; and Matt Cook ’17, village trustee.

Event organizers included Megan Abbas, assistant professor of history, and Nancy Lowmaster, pastor of Geneseo’s Central Presbyterian Church.
