From Choosing Geneseo to Helping Others Do the Same

Portrait of Surjit Arnone ’23

When Surjit Arnone first arrived at SUNY Geneseo in 2019, he was drawn to the college’s strong academics and beautiful campus. What he didn’t expect was how deeply the Geneseo experience would shape his path forward. Now, just a few years after graduating, Arnone has come full circle, joining the Admissions team as an Educational Opportunity Program (EOP)  specialist. In his role, he helps open doors for future students, especially those from underrepresented communities, offering them the same life-changing opportunities that inspired him.

What's something about Geneseo's campus community that surprised you?

Arnone: I was impressed with how involved and passionate the students are. The campus is lively—classes are held outside, students set up hammocks on the green. There are always students studying and working outside and around campus.

But what really brings it together are the GREAT Day presentations. Getting to see the culmination of weeks of work from students from every department makes clear just how much the people LIVE for the work they do.

If you were showing a friend around the Geneseo area for the first time, where would you take them?

Arnone: We would have to start on Main Street. There is such a nice variety of places to eat and little shops. Ideally, it would be great if the farmer’s market were happening that day, too. But on campus, the Gazebo is the spot for a view of Geneseo. The best view, and close to the action.

In what ways did Geneseo prepare you for life after graduation?

Arnone: Geneseo gave me more than just an education—it gave me a sense of independence and essential skills to build projects and pursue my interests. For example, I chose to participate in GREAT Day and share my research on a topic I love, memes as a form of extremist political rhetoric. Conducting my own research and creating my own projects shaped who I am today.

I loved Geneseo so much, I came back to work for the College as an admissions counselor!
