Geneseo’s Special Education Program Earns High Ranking

College Choice Special Ed Award

The Special Education program at SUNY Geneseo has earned a place in College Choice’s Best Special Education Degrees for 2017.

The online publication ranked the School of Education’s program 18th in country noting the extensive field experience that is required before students commence their semester-long student teaching.

There are currently 200 undergraduates enrolled in the Childhood-Special Education program at Geneseo, according to Anjoo Sikka, dean of the Ella Cline Shear School of Education.

Even though the profession is “very fulfilling,” there is a shortage of teachers in special education, Sikka pointed out. “At Geneseo, we are preparing teacher candidates to be advocates for their students and their well-being, and to help them achieve their learning goals, independence, and self-sufficiency.”

SUNY Geneseo began as a teacher training institute nearly 150 years ago, and teacher education remains one of our most popular majors.
