SUNY Geneseo’s efforts to support first-generation college students have earned national recognition from FirstGen Forward, which recently welcomed the College into its 2025–26 cohort.

Through programs like TRIO Student Support Services, peer mentorship, dedicated advising, and inclusive academic practices, Geneseo has built a culture of belonging for first-generation students to succeed.

"We are delighted to be chosen for the FirstGen Forward Network,” says President Denise A. Battles. “Our selection underscores our deep and ongoing commitment to supporting the success of first-generation students and to access and equity more broadly. Having been a first-generation student, I recognize how impactful a focused approach to welcoming and engaging this population is, and I'm thrilled by the opportunities for enhancing our efforts through this national network."

FirstGen Forward, formerly the Center for First-generation Student Success, offers a national platform for institutions to share best practices and scale student support through a structured, three-phase framework. Geneseo joins a growing cohort of more than 480 colleges and universities nationwide.

New network members participate in monthly workshops, peer learning communities, and professional development. Institutions may progress to Network Leader or Champion status by demonstrating measurable gains in student outcomes and long-term investment in first-generation success.
