Polish-born composer and pianist Beata Golec––a Geneseo adjunct lecturer in music––will perform in “The Color of Emotions” faculty recital on Sept. 11 from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m. in Doty Recital Hall. Rebeca Boyd, a violinist and Eastman Community Music School teacher that Golec has collaborated with previously, will join her in the concert.
Golec explained that title of the recital comes from her desire to change the generally negative outlook toward modern music.
“Typically, we’re afraid of music of the 20th and 21st centuries … We think it’s calculated, it’s cold, we can’t understand it-- even us musicians … I want to prove differently,” said Golec. “There’s a lot of emotion in the 20th and 21st centuries, there’s a lot of color. There’s a lot of intimacy being portrayed by composers, and there can be a balance between intellect and emotions in music. We don’t have to fear modern music just because it says ‘modern.’”
The concert will consist of compositions from all women composers who are, according to Golec, “typically underprivileged and underrepresented on our stages.” The first half of the concert will feature work from famous Polish composer and violinist Gra?yna Bacewicz and English composer Diana Burrell.
The second half, however, will exclusively feature Golec’s compositions, including the premiere of her new piece, “We Remember.” Golec noted that the inspiration for the epitaph composition came largely from commemorating those who died in the events of 9/11 – the date of the performance.
“That was one of the reasons for composing these works, to remember all of the deceased, especially those who died in such tragic situations or circumstances as 9/11 victims,” said Golec.
“The Color of Emotions” is free and open to the public.
Golec will be interviewed the day of the recital during the noon newscast on Rochester TV station WROC, Channel 8.
