GENESEO, N.Y. – Ganie DeHart, Distinguished Teaching Professor and chair of SUNY Geneseo’s Department of Psychology, has been named the 2015 Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching New York Professor of the Year.

DeHart is among 35 national recipients of the award this year selected from a pool of nearly 400 nominees. The award recognizes professors for their commitment to undergraduate teaching, scholarly approach to teaching and learning, and contributions to undergraduate education in their institution, community and profession. The Carnegie Foundation-sponsored awards program is administered by the Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE).

“I'm obviously very honored by this award,” said DeHart. “I was absolutely stunned to get the news. I knew the college had nominated me, but I'd pretty much forgotten about it in the intervening months, so receiving the notification was a huge surprise.”

DeHart, who was named a SUNY Distinguished Teaching Professor in 2014, has been a professor at Geneseo for 27 years and is widely known on and off campus for her innovative, extensive research in sibling relationships.

“This is a well-deserved award to someone who is a superb teacher and scholar,” said SUNY Geneseo Provost Carol S. Long. “Geneseo is very fortunate to have her as a member of our faculty.”

For 23 out of her 27 years of teaching, DeHart has worked with students to conduct a longitudinal study of Anglo children's sibling and friend relationships from early childhood through adolescence.

DeHart expressed her gratitude for the students and opportunities that she has had at Geneseo.

“One of my favorite things about Geneseo is having such wonderful students to teach and work with on research,” said DeHart. “I'm also very grateful for the college's generous support of faculty-student research collaboration.
