GENESEO, N.Y. - Six SUNY Geneseo student-athletes were named recipients of the 2015-16 State University of New York Scholar-Athlete Award, in recognition of outstanding academic excellence and athletic achievement, announced Tuesday by SUNY Chancellor Nancy L. Zimpher.

This year's honorees included sophomore Jeff Doser (men's swimming & diving), senior Jenna Gibbons (women's swimming & diving), senior Elena Hingston (field hockey), senior Ashton Hughes (women's cross country), senior Emily Lindsay (equestrian) and sophomore Lauren Salzano (women's tennis).

"Recipients of this award are honored for high achievement in and out of the classroom, accomplishment marked by hard work, dedication, and discipline," said Zimpher. "Congratulations to each of this year's SUNY scholar athletes, and thank you to the many faculty, coaches, and staff across SUNY who mentor and support them."

In order to be considered for this award, student athletes were nominated by their campus athletic director. Nominees' academic credentials and athletic accomplishments were then reviewed by a panel of athletic directors from across the SUNY system and members of the SUNY provost's office.

Geneseo's six recipients were the highest total out of the 10 members in the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC). Since the inception of the award in 2003, 85 Geneseo student-athletes have won nearly 30 percent of the SUNY Chancellor's Scholar-Athlete awards eligible to SUNYAC membership.

Of the 78 total honorees from across the SUNY system's 64 college and university campuses, to include every Division I, II, III and junior college program, only one other institution (Nassau Community College) had as many recipients as Geneseo this year.
