Ice Time

Open skates are free for all SUNY Geneseo students, but skates are not provided. Our club offers two types of practices: recreation and competition

Open Skate times:

Daily skating open to everyone, regardless of club membership or affiliation with SUNY Geneseo. An updated monthly calendar is posted outside the rink doors.

  • Monday–Friday: 12:30–1:50PM
  • Saturday and Sunday: 6:30–7:50PM

Recreation Skate times:

This practice is for our learning skaters that aren’t competing. We have two Geneseo students that coach Basic 1-6 skills and freestyle skating levels.

  • Tuesdays 8:15–9:05PM

Competition Skate times:

This is for our skaters that will be going to competitions. There are no coaches at this practice, and skaters need to run their programs at least one time at every practice.

  • Thursdays 8:15–9:05PM

Competitions

Skaters of all levels are able to compete in USFSA Intercollegiate Competitions. USFSA Intercollegiate events include singles, dance, and team maneuvers.

Off-Ice

Off ice (Fridays 3:00–3:45PM), occasional spin and yoga bonding events as a team.

What to bring

  • Sneakers, a jump rope, a spinner, and be ready to sweat and have fun with your teammates!

Learn to Skate

GFSC members are able to volunteer with basic skills lessons run by the Skating Club of the Finger Lakes in Geneseo. The children range from ages 5-16 and lessons are held on Saturdays at 10:00AM

Member Expectations

Have your own figure skates, wear athletic clothing (no jeans), gloves, and guards

Frequently Asked Questions

When can I join?

  • We hold informational meetings at the beginning of each semester. We’ll be holding our general interest meeting on Friday, January 23rd at 5:00PM in Bailey 102. Our competition informational meeting will be Tuesday, January 27th at 7:30PM. Dues ($35 to @madisonwener on Venmo) and mandatory waivers (emailed of given to Rileigh @rll13@geneseo.edu) both need to be sent by Friday, January 30th at 11:59PM.

What should I wear or bring to practice?

  • Figure skates are required, and we recommend purchasing guards to protect your blades, but we understand if that’s not feasible for everyone! Wear athletic clothing (not jeans), some socks, gloves, and water! If all you have are skates, we still encourage you to come! We’re all college students and we know how expensive this sport can be.

Where can I buy figure skates?

  • There are beginner skates on Amazon and Ebay that aren’t as expensive! Feel free to reach out to an eboard member to make sure you’re buying the right thing and have the correct size. Once you have skates, make sure you get them sharpened before getting on the ice. Rochester Ice Center and Genesee Valley Park offer skate sharpening, as well as local people in Rochester. Please reach out to an eboard member for contact information.
