For the first time, SUNY Geneseo will host a combined Homecoming and Family Weekend, Sept. 22 –23. Over 1,600 alumni and parents have registered for the celebration that will include plenty of opportunities for attendees to catch up with classmates, students, faculty and staff, as well as catch a glimpse of what life’s like at SUNY Geneseo.

“By putting the two events together, we’ll unite the past with the present, and creating a wonderful opportunity for alumni to rekindle ties with old classmates while offering families a chance to reconnect with their students,” said Ronna Gillam, director of alumni relations.

The 2017 Homecoming and Family Weekend events get underway at 6 p.m. Friday, Sept. 22, with the 11th Annual Friday Knight 5K. Other events during the jam-packed weekend include breakfast with President Denise Battles, campus tours, art exhibits, movie screenings and sporting events.

Saturday highlights include:

10 a.m.: Mini college sessions, including classroom demonstrations to illustrate the basic laws of nature, lead by Kurt Fletcher, Distinguished Teaching Professor of Physics and Astronomy, and Amber Charlebois, lecturer of chemistry; and a discussion of Irish history and literature, facilitated by Rob Doggett, professor of English, and Joe Cope, professor of history.

10 a.m.: “Stories of the College: How the Normal School Came to Geneseo,” a history of SUNY Geneseo, presented by Wayne Mahood, professor emeritus of education, and author of “SUNY Geneseo: From Normal School to Public Ivy.” His talk will be supplemented by original research from students.

  • 1:30- 3:30 p.m.: The fourth annual Shark Tank hosted by VentureWorks. Student entrepreneurs will pitch up to 30 raw business ideas in 2-minutes, soliciting insights, comments, and advice from the audience. Would you invest in these ideas?
  •
  • 2 p.m.: Open Houses hosted by the Center for Inquiry, Discovery, and Development (CIDD) and the Center for LGBTQ Student Life.
  •
  • 3 p.m.: South Village residence hall tours.
  •
  • 7 p.m.: A rock-acapella performance by Voiceplay, who will bring their style of entertainment to campus. The group performed on season 4 of NBC’s “The Sing Off,” where they performed the orchestrated sounds of an entire musical production with nothing but their voices.

In addition to campus festivities, the Village of Geneseo will be buzzing with activities. The Chicken Wing Fest and Village Fall Festival will be in full-swing on Center Street. Chicken wing tastings will be offered by participating vendors. Ticket holders can vote for their favorite in the “Best Wings in the Valley” contest.

  • Village Fall Festival activities include the Main Street Pumpkin Hunt and the highly-anticipated Great Pumpkin Race.
