Last New Year’s, I read something about how so many resolutions are difficult and punishing, like trying to lose weight or stop swearing—things that are hard to do. The article suggested making a New Year’s resolution that brought you joy instead, and I thought that was a lovely idea.
So I resolved to eat as many different shapes of pasta as I can in the course of the year—because who doesn’t love eating pasta? It also involves keeping a list of all those pasta shapes, and I love making lists, so that’s extra bonus joy for me.

I had no idea so many pasta shapes existed when I started this. There are probably ten different kinds in my pantry right now, including some brand new to me, like mafaldine, which is a narrow lasagna-like noodle with the same ruffly edges. It’s pretty easy to find weird pasta shapes at grocery stores—obviously, since I have so many at home already!—but I want to explore artisanal pasta makers to get me over the New Year’s resolution finish line. I really want to try bucatini.
I love adding to the list. As my list grows, my joy grows.
