The Rochester City School District (RCSD) has awarded $76,800 to Susan Norman, director of the School of Education’s Xerox Center for Multicultural Teacher Education, in support of this summer’s Rochester Young Scholars Academy at Geneseo (RYSAG).

The RCSD Community Partners to Support Expanded Learning Opportunities Program provided the award, which may be renewed for up to three additional years.

“The Rochester City School District has long recognized the value of RYSAG, and I’m thrilled to receive this funding support, which will allow us to continue offering a high-impact educational experience for the students involved in the program,” said Norman. “I’m very much looking forward to working with this year’s group of talented scholars.”

This is the 12th year for the RYSAG program, a two-week residential camp, which will host 64 rising sixth- through 11th grade RCSD students on the SUNY Geneseo campus July 16-27. Faculty members are conducting the science sessions and college students from Geneseo and other local universities will participate as counselors.

The theme for this year’s camp is “Operation World Peace,” during which students will engage in a collaborative, project-based learning curriculum to build their awareness of global humanitarian crises and possible solutions through interdisciplinary study and real-world problem solving.

The students will participate in four unique courses, including “Communication and Peacemaking,” Civic Education and Peace Building,” “Science of Peacekeeping and Study of Sustainability,” and “Mathematical Problem-Solving for Global Citizenry.” The curriculum will stress diplomacy, collaboration and critical thinking to solve the significant challenges facing our world today.

“I admire Susan’s dedication to RYSAG and the Saturday tutoring program in support of RCSD students,” said Anjoo Sikka, dean of the School of Education. “Susan and as well as the College faculty and staff involved in making RYSAG successful over the years are to be commended for supporting our commitment to partnerships with school districts.”

Additional funding for this year’s camp is being provided by the Greater Rochester Summer Learning Association (GRSLA) and the College.
