A new study examines the spread of mistletoe—a parasitic plant—and finds that the plant’s success is determined not only by its compatibility with a host tree but also whether or not the plants’ fruiting seasons overlap. Knowing what factors are necessary for the parasite to spread may help scientists better understand the variability of other parasitic interactions, including infectious diseases.

James W. Ratigan, a 71-year-old retiree from Friendship, N.Y., is not one to remain idle. And now that he has a Geneseo bachelor’s degree in hand, it’s unlikely that idleness will ever be an issue.

Ratigan retired from the U.S. Postal Service in 2000 but didn’t find retirement to his liking.

“Staying at home was too confining and not my style,” said Ratigan, a U.S. Army and Navy veteran. “So I decided to go to college.”

Ratigan received his associate’s degree from Genesee Community College in 2001, where the allure of theatre got his attention.

Metzler was the keynote speaker for Geneseo’s 151st commencement ceremonies during which the college conferred an estimated 1,175 degrees.
