Education Professor Receives Second-Year Funding from the Library ofCongress

Dr. James Oigara, assistant professor of education, has secured a second-year funding
renewal for the SUNY Geneseo Library of Congress Teaching with Primary Sources
(TPS) grant project
, reaffirming the program’s success and impact. This three-year
initiative empowers both pre-service and in-service teachers to bring history and social
studies to life by integrating primary sources from the Library of Congress through
inquiry-based learning.

The project enhances the elementary teacher education course Social Studies and
Curriculum Integration
, where pre-service teachers design engaging, inquiry-driven
lesson plans using authentic historical materials and implement them during their field-
based practicum experiences. In addition, the program offers free professional
development workshops for in-service teachers, equipping educators with practical
strategies for using the Library of Congress’s rich digital collections in their classrooms.

The TPS program is the Library of Congress’s flagship educational initiative, designed
to strengthen students’ critical thinking, analytical skills, and content knowledge through
access to millions of digitized primary sources transforming the way teachers teach and
students learn.
