Katherine (Katie) Cann is a human-environment geographer who studies how people adapt to emerging and intensifying weather and climate hazards. Recent research projects have focused on the localized impacts of extreme rainfall and associated flooding on housing, transportation, and small business operations. Her research is based in urban and coastal environments in the Northeastern United States, with a particular focus in metropolitan New York City. Katie practices community engaged research methods, including methodological co-production, community mapping, and citizen science to ensure that local voices guide the development of research outputs. Drawing on resilience and sustainability studies, environmental and climate justice praxis, hazard and disaster studies, political ecology, science and technology studies, and urban geography, Katie integrates critical geographic perspectives into her research. Recent projects have been supported by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and the Hudson River Foundation. Previously, Katie conducted research on community-based conservation and land management along the Pacific coast in Panama.
