Gender, Sexuality, and Women’s Studies
Gender, sexuality, and women’s studies aims to understand gender and sexuality as interrelated systems of structural inequality. The department centers gender minorities—including women and LGBTQ+ people—in everything it does, but it also focuses on the ways in which sexism, heterosexism, and cisexism harm all people, including men and straight cisgender individuals.

Political Science
The political science major focuses on the study of politics in the United States and other countries other than the United States, the political relations between nations, and the contributions of political philosophers.
Philosophy
Philosophy class sizes are small, and majors are encouraged to combine philosophy with other majors. Courses explore responsible citizenship, intellectual humility, and skills desired by today’s employers: analysis, communication, leadership, collaboration, and problem-solving.

History
History courses at Geneseo let students explore how humans throughout history have survived, grown, resisted, and changed—from the environmental history of modern Africa to the struggle for workers’ rights in the 20th-century US to the intellectual history of the Islamic world.
French
French is the only language other than English that is spoken on all five inhabited continents. At Geneseo, students learn not just about France, but about the whole Francophone world, from professors with extensive knowledge of Africa, Europe, and French-speaking Canada.

Widely honored for its teaching excellence, the English department believes students flourish when given the freedom to pursue their own passions. The English major is short on rigid requirements and long on dynamism and variety.
Black and Africana Studies
The major is designed for students who want to understand why Black lives matter from an interdisciplinary standpoint. Our country is dealing with the legacies of slavery and Jim Crow, confronting the devastation of mass incarceration, and understanding recent events in the light of white supremacy.
