Dance Ensemble presents 49Live: Beyond Boundless

SUNY Geneseo Dance Ensemble

GENESEO, N.Y. -- SUNY Geneseo's Dance Ensemble will feature works by student and alumnae choreographers during its "49Live: Beyond Boundless" performance Dec. 8-11 in the Alice Austin Theatre. The Thursday through Saturday performances begin at 7:30 p.m. and the Sunday matinee begins at 2 o'clock. Tickets are $10 and available through the Student Association Ticket Office or online.

The production is artistically directed and produced by Jonette Lancos, professor of dance studies, and all dances to be performed are choreographed by students and alumnae of the college's Dance Studies Program.

Senior Laura Dolan will present her modern work, “Vita Incerta,” based on a Douglas Adams quote: “I may not have gone where I intended to go, but I think I have ended up where I needed to be.” A contemporary piece, “I Found,” choreographed by junior Teresa Beckman, reflects on bittersweet memories of past relationships. Alumna Megan Roberts ’15 will perform “Holocene,” a contemporary solo, originally presented at the Rochester Fringe Festival in September. “Give/Take,” a modern work choreographed by senior Brynn Davie, will close the concert with an emotional depiction of the struggle between independence and accepting help from others.

“The Nature of Woman” will be performed by the dance composition class. Teresa Beckman, Bridget Beermann, Sierra Bouchard, Emily Ellmann, Taylor Gerner, Tiphereth Hassan, Quinn Johanson, Teagan Plimpton, Mina Raj, and Alexandra Sherry will present final projects by using the elements of design (line, shape, size, color, value, texture) and the principles of design (balance, contrast, dominance, gradation, harmony, repetition, variation, unity) as exhibited in selected paintings by Mary Abbott, Lee Krasner, Georgia O’Keeffe and Miriam Schapiro.

The dance kinesiology class will perform “Ball Dance by taking the technique and theory of PhysioBall conditioning beyond exercise through the development of a creative dance. The pointe and ballet III classes will perform “Dances from the Ballet Class,” a combination of individual class portfolios.

Assisting Lancos with the production are student assistants Brynn Davie and Alexandra Sherry, both seniors. Senior Courtney Cavallo is stage manager for the concert, with student lighting designers mentored by theater faculty and technical director Johnnie Ferrell. Theater faculty member Bonita Stubblefield is mentoring student costume designers.
