German is one of the most widely spoken languages in the world, as a primary language in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland, a second language throughout the European Union, and often in Asian and African countries.
Spanish is the most common non-English language spoken in the US and the second-most spoken globally, making a broad awareness of Hispanic cultures and heritages valuable for almost any career path.
French is the only language other than English that is spoken on all five inhabited continents. At Geneseo, students learn not just about France, but about the whole Francophone world, from professors with extensive knowledge of Africa, Europe, and French-speaking Canada.
The major is designed for students who want to understand why Black lives matter from an interdisciplinary standpoint. Our country is dealing with the legacies of slavery and Jim Crow, confronting the devastation of mass incarceration, and understanding recent events in the light of white supremacy.
