Swimming Crustacean Eats Unlikely Food Source in Deep Ocean

A new study published today in the journal Proceedings of the Royal Society B: Biological Sciences sheds light on a remarkable isopod species named Bathyopsurus nybelini. Using the submersible Alvin, scientists, including SUNY Geneseo Assistant Professor Mackenzie Gerringer, encountered this isopod swimming 3.7 miles deep in the Puerto Rico Trench and Cayman Trough.
