Favorite Geneseo tradition: New Student Convocation
Favorite campus or local restaurant: I can't wait to try everything Geneseo has to offer! I will report back on Mia's and Aunt Cookie's Sub Shop shortly!
Hobbies and interests: My main hobby would be participating in community theatre. There is nothing like treading the boards and performing for an eager audience that is waiting to be taken on a musical journey. I also manage the social media for a non-profit theatre group called The Off-Monroe Players which performs the works of Gilbert and Sullivan. I love to travel, fly through books and watch Bravo TV.
Favorite place on campus: Red Jacket Dining Hall is amazing! You can see the hard work that went into making it such a phenomenal space. I love that the furniture was obtained from local artisans and the food offerings are outstanding. It's definitely a great place to grab a bite, socialize, hang out and/or relax!
Favorite movie: How to choose?! Amadeus, The Godfather, The Pirates of Penzance, Summer Stock, The Departed. My Top 5!
Favorite book: The Great Gatsby. Discovering Fitzgerald in 9th grade greatly impacted my skills as a writer and I quickly got lost in the astounding beauty of his pages.
Favorite ice cream (or sweet treat): Alas, ice cream is not on the menu for me. My favorite sweet treat since childhood would be Savoia's Pastry Shoppe's tea cookies! Savoia's is a small bakery in Rochester you must visit if you are in the area. There is a brick wall on one side of the building that smells like freshly-baked cookies due to the placement of a magical vent. When that sweet aroma hits you, you know you're in for the best treat around.
What music are you currently listening to? Sam Smith, Elvis, Ray LaMontagne, Marc Broussard, Ed Sheeran, Imagine Dragons, James Bay, The Guess Who, Sam Cooke, Foreigner, Linda Ronstadt, Sara Bareilles.
If we visited your office, what would we see? Lots of hand sanitizer! I am slowly decorating my new office. I inherited a couple of paintings from the previous occupant and brought one with me from my previous job. You will also rarely find the overhead lights on because fluorescent lighting does not inspire me.
Do you have any advice for prospective students? 1. If you don't have a resume of the awesome things you've been doing in high school, start one now! Don't be afraid to brag about your accomplishments and go into detail about them. A resume is a living document that you can update as you continue to accumulate experiences. 2. Do your research! College is a huge investment of your time, resources, and energy. As with any big decision, you should commit to being as informed as possible. Go on college websites and dive deep. Check out all forms of social media to get a sense of what daily life is like on campus. Can you picture yourself there? Will your needs be met? Will your goals be prioritized and accomplished? 3. Don't be afraid to ask questions! Ask the counselors, support staff, students, professors...no one should be off-limits when you're on a campus visit or want to learn more about a particular college. You can tell a lot about a school by how willing the people are to talk to and engage with you. In my time at Geneseo, I've witnessed countless times how open and willing everyone is to give directions, answer questions and be candid about life here whether it's in person, over the phone or on social media. It's an incredibly welcoming atmosphere and you will definitely be able to get a sense of that from your interactions with our community! 4. Stay Calm. Stay Organized. Stay Positive. Breathe.
Fun fact about Rachel: I went to a fundraiser at Jon Bon Jovi's house in NJ in 2004. It was an outstanding evening filled with movie stars, music and dedicated humans working toward a common goal. He even sang my 'get pumped' anthem Livin' On A Prayer!
