Jewish Learning Fellowship

The Jewish Learning Fellowship (JLF) is a 10-week experiential, conversational seminar for students looking to deepen their understanding of Judaism on their own terms. We’re interested in asking big questions. You know, the big stuff — like Who am I? What communities am I a part of? What is worth committing myself to, and why? And we don’t purport to have any of the big answers. JLF was founded in 2007 at the Bronfman Center for Jewish Student Life at NYU. Since then, JLF has graduated over 3,000 fellows.

We make no claims about the “right” way to practice or not to practice Judaism. Our job is to help you explore the tradition in a safe space and find your own place, on your terms, in Judaism’s Great Conversation.

SUNY Geneseo's inaugural JLF cohort will be led by Jewish Theological Seminary Rabbinical Student Emmanuel Cantor (bio below).

Upon completion of the Fellowship, students will receive a $180 stipend.

Emmanuel Cantor:
Emmanuel (he/him/his) is a rabbinical student at the Jewish Theological Seminary, where he is a Wexner Graduate Fellow and serves as a Rabbinic Intern at the Slifka Center for Jewish Life at Yale. Before rabbinical school, Emmanuel worked as a community organizer for Jews United for Justice (JUFJ), a grassroots organization advancing social, racial, and economic justice in DC and Maryland. While doing so, he lived with *eleven* housemates in an Avodah Bayit, an intentional, cooperative Jewish community rooted in justice work. He studied Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies at Yale, has guided backpacking trips along the Appalachian Trail, and studied at Yeshivat Maale Gilboa in northern Israel. When he is not working or in class, you can find Emmanuel volunteering with the Center for Anti-Violence Education, trying his best in the kitchen, or jogging to early 2000’s top 40. Thanks to a partnership with Hillel International, our JLF seminar will be lead by a Rabbinical student from the Jewish Theological Seminary.
