Donate to Geneseo

Join the thousands of alumni, faculty, staff, students, and friends who have stepped forward to ensure that Geneseo maintains its position among the nation’s foremost public liberal arts colleges.

For public colleges like ours, financial pressure is compounded by a significant reduction in state support over the years. At Geneseo, we're proud of our reputation and are determined to preserve the exceptional quality of our education. Donate now.

Important Update: CARES Act Tax Incentives

The Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security or CARES Act offers a number of tax incentives for charitable giving. These provisions expire on December 31, 2020, so time is running out to take advantage of one or more that may apply to you:

Increase in Standard Deduction and New Above-the-Line Deduction

For the 2020 tax year, the standard deduction has increased to:

  • $24,800 for married filing jointly
  • $12,400 for single taxpayers and those filing separately
  • $18,650 for heads of households

For donors claiming the standard deduction on their 2020 taxes, who do not itemize, the CARES Act offers a new above-the-line deduction for charitable gifts made in cash up to $300 per individual.

Increased Limits

The CARES Act increased the adjusted gross income (AGI) limit for cash contributions by both individual and corporate donors. For cash contributions made in 2020, individuals can now elect to deduct up to 100 percent of AGI (increased from 60 percent) and corporations can now deduct up to 25 percent of taxable income (increased from 10 percent).

IRA Qualified Charitable Distributions UNCHANGED

The CARES Act did not change the rules around the Qualified Charitable Distribution, or QCD. Individuals over 70½ can donate up to $100,000 in IRA assets directly to a qualifying charity (such as the Geneseo Foundation) annually, without taking the distribution into taxable income.

However, the increase in individual limits on deductions to 100% of AGI effectively makes this strategy available to donors over 59½. By taking a cash distribution from their IRA, and contributing that cash to a qualifying charity, they may completely offset the tax attributable to the IRA distribution by taking the charitable deduction in an amount up to 100% of their AGI for the 2020 tax year. This may be a smart strategy for donors between 59½ and 70½ who are not depending on existing retirement funds.

How Your Gift Can Help

There may be no greater gift than access to education. Supporting Geneseo strengthens the College's ability to assist students in financial need, and to provide merit-based scholarships that attract the brightest young minds to our campus.

Academic Innovation

Contributions from alumni, parents, and friends help fund research opportunities and the many unique departmental and interdisciplinary initiatives that define the Geneseo experience.

Faculty Support

Mentorship and hands-on learning are hallmarks of a Geneseo education, producing graduates who have trained alongside accomplished professors and advisors. Private support helps us attract and retain dedicated, innovative faculty.

Global Education

Gifts to Geneseo help fund international study programs that offer students broader geographical and cultural perspectives, giving Geneseo students a competitive edge in this increasingly global society.

The lessons young men and women learn as student-athletes shape them into individuals with the vision, perseverance and leadership skills to tackle future challenges. Your support helps ensure the future of Geneseo’s athletic programs.

Student Life

Gifts to the college support the residential facilities, health services and extracurricular opportunities that make Geneseo a welcoming, fun and inspiring place to learn.

Our Campus

Your gift helps maintain and enhance the beauty of our college campus. Geneseo's buildings combine historic distinction with state-of-the-art settings for teaching, learning, and living — but require ongoing maintenance and renovation to meet changing needs.
