Geneseo Is a Voter Friendly Campus

Voter friendly campus award

SUNY Geneseo is designated a “Voter Friendly Campus” for 2023–24 through a program sponsored by NASPA—Student Affairs Administrators in Higher Education and Fair Election Center’s Campus Vote Project. Geneseo is among 258 campuses in 38 states to receive the recognition.

The mission of the 2023 "Voter Friendly Campus" designation is to bolster efforts by colleges and universities to help students overcome barriers to participating in the political process every year, not just during years featuring federal elections. Geneseo was evaluated based on a written plan for how the College planned to register, educate, and turnout student voters in 2022, how the College facilitated voter engagement efforts on campus, and a final analysis of the efforts.

Institutions that received the designation were commended for their efforts to break down barriers and empower students with information and tools they need to participate in the political process, and to open the door to their lifelong civic engagement.

Geneseo's student organizers are Andrew Goodman Foundation Vote Everywhere Ambassadors Nicola "Nick" Bruno '23 and Timothy Rainis '23, the Student-Athlete Mentor staffGOLD Leader Mentor staff, and Emilee Meadors '24, the Geneseo Student Association director of student affairs.

"I am incredibly proud of our student leaders and the members of the Geneseo Votes Coalition that continually activate, educate, and inspire Geneseo students to participate in our political process," says Nicholas Palumbo, assistant dean of students for leadership and service. "The success of our democracy depends on a commitment to civic engagement and a system that ensures voters' voices are heard. This year's VFC designation strengthens and reifies our College community's commitment to accessible and equitable participation in the political process for all."
