Commencement 2025 (SUNY Geneseo/Matt Burkhartt)
Washington Monthly selected SUNY Geneseo as one of only 25 colleges and universities in the United States as a Best-in-Class College.
This year, Washington Monthly updated its rankings categories and methodology. It combined all four-year colleges and universities—public and private, big and small, research and teaching—into a single master list of more than 1,400 institutions. According to the editors, the aim is "to focus even more squarely on what we think Americans most want from our colleges and universities: that they help students of modest means earn degrees that pay off in the marketplace, don't saddle them with heavy debt, and prepare—indeed, encourage—them to become active members of our democracy."
Geneseo is the only SUNY selected for the Best-in-Class list, which includes renowned institutions such as Princeton, Johns Hopkins, and Rutgers. As the magazine notes, the list contains institutions that "differ in size, geography, and mission. Some are prestigious and famous. Others are largely unknown outside their regions. But all show what's possible when colleges put students and the public good first."
Washington Monthly is a nonprofit magazine sponsored in part by the Lumina Foundation, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, the Foundation for Civic Leadership, and the Strada Education Foundation. The magazine has published its rankings since 2005.
