Katherine Treadgold '23, a double major in international relations (concentration in global political economy) and geography, from Bethlehem, NY, has been named a Newman Civic Fellow for 2021–22.

The Newman Civic Fellowship is a year-long fellowship for community-committed college students from institutions that are members of the Campus Compact. Selected students are advocates for civic engagement in higher education, who are invested in finding solutions to challenges facing communities throughout the United States and abroad. The yearlong program includes virtual learning opportunities and networking as part of a national network of engaged student leaders and an optional in-person convening.

Treadgold has worked collaboratively with the local community, multiple offices on-campus, and national organizations to lead the Geneseo Votes Coalition (GVC) and Geneseo's Andrew Goodman Vote Everywhere Ambassadors. The GVC is a student-led group of civically-minded student organizations and community leaders dedicated to fostering civic responsibility. Her work through the GVC and Andrew Goodman Foundation focuses on voter registration, civic education, and voting rights on-campus.

Treadgold has also directly addressed sustainability issues on campus through her work with the Geneseo Bee Keeping Club and Geneseo's Office of Sustainability. Through her diligent efforts, she helps educate people about sustainability and pollinators' impact on the natural world and agricultural systems.

Treadgold is currently working with the local community, college administration, and Geneseo students to reimagine the location of our on-campus polling site, developing a virtual voter registration curriculum for orientation, and actively developing innovative methods for promoting sustainability at SUNY Geneseo.

Nicholas Palumbo, assistant dean of students for leadership and service, will serve as Treadgold's on-campus Newman Civic Fellow mentor.

Treadgold begins her fellowship on September 1.
