Department Awards and Scholarships

William T. Beauchamp Memorial Award

Presented to a graduating senior for "outstanding service to the vitality of literature on campus."

Rosalind R. Fisher Award

Presented each year for outstanding achievement in student teaching in English.

Patricia Conrad Lindsay Memorial Award

Presented annually to a senior in liberal arts English for excellence in scholastic achievement and intellectual promise.

Hans Gottschalk Award

Presented annually to a sophomore English major distinguished for integrity, intellectual curiosity, academic achievement and promise, and dedication.

Joseph O'Brien Memorial Award

Presented annually to a senior English major who has exhibited those attributes exemplified in the life and career of our colleague Joe O'Brien: a demonstrated record of academic excellence, a spirit of volunteerism, and a sterling moral character.

Calvin Israel Award

Awarded for excellence in the humanities.

Natalie Selser Freed Memorial Scholarship

Presented annually to a junior English major who demonstrates academic excellence by earning the highest grade point average within the English major (after completing 21 hours). The scholarship is funded by Dr. Walter Freed in loving memory of his mother.

Rita K. Gollin Scholarship for Excellence in American Literature

The Dr. Rita K. Gollin Scholarship provides two awards each year to students who have demonstrated excellence in the study of American Literature. The first is given to a junior, announced in the spring and awarded for his or her senior year. The second is given to a sophomore, announced in the spring and awarded for his or her junior year. These special awards are funded through an endowment established by Dr. Rita K. Gollin, Distinguished Professor of English Emerita.

Jérôme de Romanet de Beaune Award in Diversity Studies

Awarded for an outstanding essay on a topic in diversity studies.

John H. Parry Award

Awarded for an outstanding essay in literary criticism.

Irene E. Smith Award

Awarded for outstanding performance in first-year writing.
