CHAS Grant to Support STEM Mentoring Program at Geneseo

Amber Charlebois and Anne Pellerin

GENESEO, N.Y. — Anne Pellerin, assistant professor of physics and astronomy, and Amber Charlebois, chemistry department lecturer, have received a Consortium for High Achievement and Success (CHAS) faculty grant of $6,500 for a pilot project to build a tiered mentoring program for undergraduate women and underrepresented minorities in STEM fields at Geneseo.

Charlebois and Pellerin plan to include the tiered mentoring program as part of the college’s GROW STEM initiative (Geneseo Reaching Out to Women and under-represented group in STEM). GROW STEM is a professional development group on campus that fosters diversity and inclusion within the faculty and students in the STEM fields.

The mentoring program would for two semesters with the goal of better positioning young women and under-represented minorities in their undergraduate STEM programs at Geneseo. Funds will support faculty and student effort, speaker honoraria and other expenses for half-day training and assessment workshops.

Geneseo’s grant was one of three awarded this year to CHAS member institutions. The grants allow faculty members to undertake a project that promotes high academic achievement among all students with a focus on promoting success and satisfaction among students of color.
