GENESEO, N.Y. – Repertorio Español, the acclaimed off-Broadway Hispanic theater company, is bringing its production of the comedy “La Gringa” to SUNY Geneseo for two performance April 11 at 10 a.m. and 7 p.m. in Wadsworth Auditorium. The Obie Award-winning production about a young woman exploring her identity is the longest-running Spanish language play in off-Broadway history. Tickets are $10 and are available online or at the Wadsworth Auditorium ticket window starting one hour before curtain time (exact cash preferred). The production runs about 90 minutes and will be staged in Spanish with English supertitles.

Playwright Carmen Rivera’s iconic comedy, which is suitable for all audiences, is a portrayal of the Puerto Rican experience as Maria, a young woman raised in New York, travels to Puerto Rico in search of her family and cultural roots. While there, her visit unfolds into comic situations and humorous misunderstandings.

“We are delighted to have Repertorio Español back on campus for this very popular and well-known production and encourage audiences of all ages to attend,” said Rose McEwen, associate professor in the College’s Department of Languages and Literatures and coordinator of the Latin American Studies Program. “We are organizing the show as part of the ‘Somos Puerto Rico’ campaign to bring attention to the plight of our Puerto Rican brothers and sisters who were devastated by Hurricane Maria. As part of these efforts, I’ll soon be starting an online auction of many of the souvenirs/museum-like pieces displayed in my office.”

All profits from the play and everything earned through the auction will be donated to Livingston CARES to assist in the organization’s Puerto Rico relief efforts.

Repertorio Español was founded in 1968 to introduce the best of Latin American, Spanish, and Hispanic American theater to broad-ranging audiences in New York City and around the country. Primary sponsors of the SUNY Geneseo production are the Office of Multicultural Programs and Services and the Office of Admissions. More information is available by calling 585-245-6344.
