Study abroad photo contest winners show personal journeys

Winning photo by Samuel Aviles '17

At Geneseo, 35 to 40 percent of students choose to experience a study abroad opportunity. There are some 600 programs to choose from; more than 50 are led by Geneseo faculty.

The annual photo contest — sponsored by the Study Abroad Office, the Geneseo Scene, and Campus Auxiliary Services — celebrates the moments big and small that make up such journeys, and the life- and mind-changing perspectives they bring.

More than 55 students submitted photos for the Study Abroad and Scene Photo Contest, in several categories, including “epiphany,” in which students submitted a photo and story about a time on their trip that shifted their perspective as being out of your comfort zone can do.

Thank you to the 123 people around campus who voted People's Choice winners.

You can view the winners online or in the Brodie Hall Bridge Gallery.

Winners received gift cards for Barnes and Noble Bookstore and Starbucks. The overall winner received a GoPro Camera, also courtesy of Campus Auxiliary Services, to document their next journey. This year, Samuel Aviles '17 won for his photo of students at a demonstration in South Africa.

Winners will be highlighted in an upcoming issue of the Scene along with a first-person story by Justen Geddes, who was the first recipient of a CAS-sponsored scholarship for a Geneseo student going on their first study abroad experience.  A new scholarship winner will be chosen in spring.
