Each student in all Chemistry laboratory classes, with the exception of Chem 361, is assigned a drawer of glassware and equipment to use throughout the semester for their experiments. On the first class meeting, students will be given an equipment checklist and verify the contents of their drawers are complete and in good, working condition. Each drawer is used by one student exclusively, and as such, that student is solely responsible for the contents of their assigned drawer, whether they have used the items or not.
Any item that is missing, damaged, or otherwise unusable from the time the drawer was assigned must be replaced and the student will be billed accordingly. Glassware and equipment cannot be paid for in any way except for billing the student’s account. Fees assessed to students for breakage and missing items are sent to Student Accounts at the end of the semester, typically around Study Day.
On the first lab meeting, all items are free to replace in your assigned drawer as you have never touched that drawer prior to then and it is not your fault if something is damaged or missing. After the first lab meeting, fees will be assessed accordingly for broken and replaced items.
The Chemistry Department has agreed to place a maximum charge on each item billed to students. You will be billed the current replacement cost of the item, or $20, whichever is cheaper. If you are working in a group during lab and an item is damaged, one student may assume the responsibility for it or the cost may be able to be split amongst the group, depending on the item. Please consult with the Chemistry Stockroom & Safety Manager for these such instances.

Use the dropdown menus below to view the cost of each item that you may be expected to pay if you break or damage the item. This pricing is updated regularly. Please note that not all of these items will be included in your assigned drawer of equipment, but you may still encounter them in the laboratory.
