Hi! I’m Lauren. I’m glad you’re here! I have worked in education for over 10 years, spending a good portion of that time as a faculty member. I taught college and high school Humanities courses in New York and Pennsylvania. Building relationships with students inspired me to go back to school to become a mental health counselor. (I have even more respect for being a college student after taking classes again.)

Before starting as a counselor at Geneseo, I worked at SUNY Brockport’s Counseling Center, collaborating with students to support their wellbeing. I found counseling helpful when I was in college and at other times in my life. I also value spaces outside of counseling that are vital for feeling grounded, supported, and cared for.

Here are some of the ways I approach counseling to help give you an idea of what it’s like to work with me:

  • I like to get to know students as whole people without separating thoughts and emotions from the situations and contexts they find themselves in.
  • I prioritize cultural humility and understanding how environmental factors and systems impact people and communities.
  • I work with students to help remove barriers impacting wellbeing by making connections to on- and off-campus resources.
  • I emphasize multiple ways of knowing and learning. (You’ll likely find paper, pens, markers, maybe even a sticker book, in the office if drawing is helpful.)
  • I try to have a variety of fidgets in the office and am always searching for new ones to try.

When I’m not in the office, I’m probably walking my dog, reading, attempting to craft, or enjoying improv comedy.
