In 2018, SUNY Geneseo marine biologist, Mackenzie Gerringer, was part of an international team of scientists who used free-falling “landers” to study the Atacama Trench, gathering images and specimens of deep-sea creatures. The team discovered a new snailfish species unique to the trench and to all other known fish species.

Ecoacoustics refers to the study of the relationship between natural sounds, human-made sounds, and the environment.
