A Small Trench-Dwelling Fish Makes a Splash in Deep-Sea Evolution
In 2018, SUNY Geneseo marine biologist, Mackenzie Gerringer, was part of an international team of scientists who used free-falling “landers” to study the Atacama Trench, gathering images and specimens of deep-sea creatures. The team discovered a new snailfish species unique to the trench and to all other known fish species.

Geneseo biology student Micah Hosely ’24 and Kristina Hannam, associate professor of biology, conducted research this summer to collect data on the ecoacoustics of local freshwater ponds. Ecoacoustics refers to the study of the relationship between natural sounds, human-made sounds, and the environment.
