Frequently Asked Questions

Do students really need a car?

Many shops, restaurants and banks are within easy walking distance from campus.  In addition there the Geneseo Public Bus Service, which is free to ride with student ID, operates a local daily fixed route that includes the bigger stores (WalMart, Wegmans, etc), a Geneseo-Rochester weekend route (Eastview & Marketplace Malls, the Public Market, Memorial Art Gallery, RIT, etc), an Express Shopper local route to help expediate shopping needs, and the Late Knight Express for local late night transportation on weekends.  Taxis and car services, county bus routes (also free to ride with student ID), free shuttles to and from the airport/bus/train before and after each break, the College Express Bus to downstate locations around breaks and on select weekends, and the Hertz On Demand car sharing  program are all valuable resources.  Our urban and international students function nicely without having cars, but it is a decision for each family to make.  If you do decide to bring a car to campus be sure to register it with Parking Services to receive a parking permit for the appropriate parking lots.

What is the Geneseo Public Bus Service?

It is a service that is contracted by SUNY Geneseo and supported by your student transportation fee.  The service is operated by LATS (Livingston Area Transportation Services), which is a regional public transit subsidiary of RGRTA (Rochester Genesee Regional Transportation Authority).  It is free to ride with student ID, and also open to the public for a nominal fee.

Does the LATS bus go to the airport?

Yes, this service makes limited stops at the Greater Rochester International Airport when the Geneseo-Rochester Weekend route is operating.  Currently the stop times are Friday at 4:45PM and Sunday at 8:55PM, but always be sure to check the most up to date bus schedule to assure these times are still accurate.  LATS also runs a Special Break Shuttle to the airport before and after each break and at the start and end of each semester.  Space is limited on the Special Break Shuttle, so prior sign up is required.

Does the LATS bus go to the bus station?

Yes, this service makes limited stops at the Trailways Bus Terminal in Rochester when the Geneseo-Rochester Weekend route is operating.  Always be sure to check the most up to date bus schedule to assure these times are still accurate.  LATS also runs a Special Break Shuttle to the bus station before and after each break and at the start and end of each semester.  Space is limited on the Special Break Shuttle, so prior sign up is required.

Does the LATS bus go to the train station?

Yes, this service makes limited stops at the Amtrak Station in Rochester when the Geneseo-Rochester Weekend route is operating.  Always be sure to check the most up to date bus schedule to assure these times are still accurate.  LATS also runs a Special Break Shuttle to the train station before and after each break and at the start and end of each semester.  Space is limited on the Special Break Shuttle, so prior sign up is required.

What if the LATS schedule doesn't work with my schedule?

There are a couple of other options in getting to the Greater Rochester International Airport, Trailways Bus Terminal, or Amtrak Station.  Taxis and car services are always an option.  Be sure to get a quote on the final price and what payment methods are accepted before agreeing to anything.  Rochester is about 35 miles North of Geneseo and prices vary between $60.00 and $100.00 one way.

Before and after each break and at the start and end of each semester the Student Association offers free shuttle buses to each of the three destinations.  Space is limited though, so prior sign up is required through the Student Association office located in the College Union.

Everyday at 6:00PM from Main Street there is a Trailways bus that leaves for the Trailways Bus Terminal in Rochester (arrives at 6:45PM).  In addition, there is a Trailways bus that leaves the Trailways Bus Terminal in Rochester everyday at 8:20AM and arrives on Main Street in Geneseo at 9:05AM.  Tickets are available through Trailways or at Joe's Comics on Main Street.  Student discounts may only be available via the local ticket outlet (Joe's Comics).
