Integrative and Applied Learning and Study Abroad

Did you know? Studying abroad is one way to complete the Geneseo IAL requirement!

In order for your study abroad program to count, it should meet the outcomes below.

Students will be able to:

  • Integrate multiple bodies of knowledge with their personal experience by asking meaningful questions about real-world problems
  • Apply skills, theories, and methods gained in academic study, professional experiences, and/or co-curricular experiences to new situations
  • Reflect upon changes in their learning and outlook over time, and integrate into their future endeavors based on that self-reflection

Students may meet the Integrative and Applied Learning (IAL) requirement in one of two ways.

  1. Take a course that is designed to meet the requirement and carries the IAL attribute. This includes many of our faculty-led study abroad programs. See the complete list here.

Many faculty-led study abroad/away programs/courses already meet this requirement. See below for all faculty-led programs that currently meet the requirement:

AY 2026-2027 Faculty-led Programs with the IAL Attribute:

    Spring Travel Added Course (TAC)

    Spring Break Travel

    Summer 2027:

Last updated: 03/26/2026 (This list is updated as faculty-led programs are reviewed and approved for IAL).

Many faculty-led study abroad/away programs/courses already meet this requirement. See below for all faculty-led programs that currently meet the requirement:

    2. If you are studying abroad on a SUNY Geneseo partner program, Other SUNY program, or a SUNY Geneseo faculty-led program that does not carry the IAL attribute, for your study abroad experience to earn the IAL attribute, you must do the following:

What Must I Do For My Study Abroad/Away Program (that does not already carry the IAL attribute) To Satisfy the IAL Learning Outcomes?

      1. Write a Study Abroad Personal Statement

All students will encounter this step when completing an application on the Horizons application platform.

      • For SUNY Geneseo students participating on Other SUNY programs, the study abroad/away personal statement is an optional step within the Horizons application — If you want your study abroad/away program to carry the IAL attribute, you must submit a personal statement that responds to the personal statement prompts displayed in Horizons.
      • The Study Abroad/Away Personal Statement is designed as a pre-departure reflection that establishes learning goals for your study abroad/away experience.

      2. Submit a Final IAL Reflection via Microsoft Forms upon completion of your study abroad/away program.

      • For a study abroad/away experience to earn the Integrative and Applied Learning (IAL) attribute and fulfill the IAL graduation requirement, students are required to complete a post-program reflection upon completion of their program.
      • After their program has ended, students will be prompted to complete a Final IAL Reflection via Microsoft Forms.
      • Students are encouraged to submit the Final IAL Reflection via Microsoft Forms by the following deadlines:
        • Spring semester study abroad/away – Submit by August 1
        • Summer term study abroad/away – Submit by September 1
        • Fall semester study abroad/away – Submit by February 1
        • Winter Intersession study abroad/away – Submit by March 1

Processes that engage students in pre-travel and post-travel reflection have been shown to have tremendous impact on a student’s ability to make meaning from their study abroad/away experience.

If you have any questions about the process, please email studyabroad@geneseo.edu or call 585-245-5546.

Student Integrative and Applied Learning Experience Portal

The Center for Integrative Learning and the Center for Digital Learning have recently launched a new portal for IAL at Geneseo! Through this portal, students are able to share brief reflections on their IAL experiences and can explore the most common types of IAL experiences pursued by Geneseo students.
