Ocotal Coffee

Coffee beansEl Sauce Service Learning Program inspires CAS to bring direct trade coffee to Geneseo

Ocotal Coffee from the El Sauce Coffee Co-operative is now available at Books & Bytes in Milne Library.

The El Sauce Service Learning Program is a unique program that provides Geneseo students the opportunity to apply their spirit of volunteerism and their education in El Sauce, an economically disadvantaged community in Nicaragua. Students get to know the farmers and families in Ocotal, a small neighboring community that has survived by producing environmentally responsible, shade grown, organic Arabica coffee for generations.

CAS is proud to support the farmers from this region through a direct trade partnership that brings the coffee beans to a local coffee roaster in Rochester and then to Geneseo, where it is sold at Books & Bytes cafe in Milne Library. This partnership gives the farmers a much fairer price for their coffee and brings the campus a high quality, organic coffee directly from Juan, Fabio, Emiliano and the other farmers in the El Sauce Coffee Co-operative.
