Chemistry Course Registration Info
This page contains informal information for current and incoming students at SUNY Geneseo related to registration for chemistry classes.
Students are strongly encouraged to review information and guidance from the College Registrar about course registration. The “toolkit” resources are also very helpful.
Please contact the Department at chem@geneseo.edu if you have additional questions or concerns.
(updated April 30, 2026)
The overload process has been replaced by the Waitlist. If you are seeking to register for a CHEM lecture or lab that is currently full…
- Add yourself to the Waitlist through your registration page (Waitlist FAQ)
- Complete the Registration Request form
The form will allow the Chemistry and Biochemistry Department to review needs and work toward accommodating students as best as possible.
The anticipated general timeline is:
- The Department will assess needs based on the Waitlist pool on April 30, 2026. Additional adjustments to the needs-based list will not occur until August 2026.
- Seats will be released on May 6, 2026. Seats will be continue to be released as they become available throughout the summer months, based on the May waitlist.
- The Department will reassess the Waitlist pool on August 17, 2026. Seats will be released as they become available throughout the end of add-drop.
Students are strongly encouraged to review the Advising Resources for Incoming Students page from the College Registrar about course registration. The “toolkit” resources are also very helpful.
All Chemistry and Biochemistry majors should take a math course in their first year. The College had planned to require a math placement exam for MATH 112 Precalculus and MATH 221 Calc I; however, due to logistical constraints the placement requirement will not been implemented in Fall 2026. Please sign-up for an advising appointment (below), if you’d like assistance selecting the appropriate math course.
We’re here to help. Course selection guides for different degree programs and backgrounds are listed below. These guides include backgrounds for most students, but do not include every situation. In addition, use the calendar below to sign-up for a virtual meeting to discuss registration and course selection with a faculty member. If you have additional questions, please contact chem@geneseo.edu
Updated 4/30/2026. Additional appointments to be added soon.
Additional course and section options may be available. Consult the college schedule for additional options
| Course # (CR) | Title | CRN | Day-Time (Instructor) |
| CHEM 100 (1CR) | Chemistry First Year Experience | 21277 -or- 22892 | F 11:30-12:20 (Peterson) -or- F 11:30-12:20 (Helms) |
| CHEM 116 (3 CR) | Chemistry I | 19140 | MWF 9:30-10:20 (Peterson) |
| CHEM 119 (1 CR) | Introductory Chemistry Laboratory | 16619 -or- 16626 | M 12:30-2:20 (Gikonyo) -or- T 12:30-2:20 (Tarun) |
| MATH 112 (4 CR) -or- MATH 221 (4 CR) | Precalculus -or- Calculus I | Students must complete a math placement exam to enroll in either of these courses. See the First-Year Student Registration and ALEKS PPL webpages for more info. | |
| WRTG 105 (4 CR) | multiple titles available | multiple times available |
Optional
A typical load would be 12-16 CR per semester (4-5 courses). A general education education course may be added to your schedule (or be included in place of WRTG 105). Possible courses are listed on the first semester course options page or can be found by searching the course schedule for an appropriate “attribute” (eg, creativity and innovation; contemporary global challenges; sustainability; world cultures and values)
Additional course and section options may be available. Consult the college schedule for additional options. Note – students who have two semesters of general chemistry credit (typically through dual enrollment programs) are strongly encouraged to enroll in Chem II course, rather than organic chemistry. This pathway may require additional waivers and students should contact chem@geneseo.edu for additional assistance
