Geneseo Earns $475K for SUNY Investment and Performance Fund Projects

GENESEO, N.Y. – SUNY Geneseo is receiving funding from the newly-established SUNY Investment and Performance Fund to support two programs aimed at helping more students complete their degrees.

The college will receive $200,000 for supplies, equipment and training associated with the creation of a Critical Language Consortium. In addition, the college will partner with Monroe Community College in a $275,000 grant to build on existing Honors Programs at the two institutions to create an Honors Transfer Path. In all, 32 proposals directly involving 22 state-operated campuses and collaborations with nine community colleges will receive funding as a result of the state’s $18 million investment.

“Geneseo is delighted to be among SUNY institutions receiving funding for these important student-centered initiatives and I applaud Chancellor Zimpher for securing this funding,” said Geneseo President Denise A. Battles. “The approval of the Investment and Performance Fund makes clear that Governor Cuomo and the legislature continue to have great confidence in what SUNY is doing for all New Yorkers.”

SUNY Chancellor Nancy L. Zimpher announced the awards today during her annual State of the University address in Albany.

“These awards are a remarkable sample of what SUNY campuses are prepared to do in order to help more students complete their degree,” said Zimpher. “Whether it’s working with area high schools to get students ready for college, supporting students at risk of falling behind, or providing an applied learning opportunity to ensure career success, SUNY is committed to improving student outcomes at every stage.”

Geneseo’s Critical Language Consortium will be a pilot collaboration program with the College at Brockport and Monroe Community College to provide student access among the three campuses to four critical languages: Arabic, Chinese, Japanese and Russian. The program will employ video conferencing methods along with face-to-face instruction. It is designed to allow students to pursue their interest in critical languages and help them complete degree requirements in a timely fashion.

The Honors Transfer Path Program will create a model transition path from the MCC Honors Program to a Geneseo honors transfer program with the goal of access, completion and success. The program will be scalable to other SUNY campuses, and information from the assessment will be widely shared throughout the system.

Campus proposals were evaluated by a distinguished panel of external reviewers, including leaders in higher education, finance, policy and research. Reviewers donated their time to ensure that proposals were consistent with or exceeded national best practices, and that they would support SUNY’s completion agenda as well as the goals of its performance management system, SUNY Excels.

In November, Chancellor Zimpher launched the Stand with SUNY campaign to secure increased state investment for the system in the upcoming 2016-17 state budget. In addition to growing the Investment and Performance Fund, the goals of the campaign are to build base funding for all campuses and extend NYSUNY2020.
