New York Governor Kathy Hochul has named Joe Leathersich ’14 to SUNY Geneseo’s College Council for a seven-year term.

Leathersich is director of advocacy, intergovernmental relations, and public policy at the Greater Rochester Chamber of Commerce, where he works with legislators and business leaders to advance policies that strengthen the regional economy. In this role, he represents the Chamber in key community initiatives, including the Rochester-Monroe Anti-Poverty Initiative, Regional Economic Development Council, OneRoc Leadership Meetings, and ReImagine Roc Housing.

Prior to joining the Chamber, Leathersich was the public information officer for the New York State Department of Transportation. He oversaw communications across 12 counties in the Finger Lakes and Southern Tier. He managed media relations, developed messaging strategies in collaboration with engineers and project managers, and worked closely with state and local leaders on infrastructure and emergency response efforts.

Leathersich also served as press secretary for US Representative Joe Morelle from 2018 to 2021, where he coordinated press events, crafted speeches and statements, and directed digital media strategy. His public service career began in the New York State Assembly, where he served in various legislative and communications roles.

A 2014 graduate of SUNY Geneseo, Leathersich earned his bachelor’s degree in economics. He is an Eagle Scout and an active community volunteer, including service with the University of Rochester Medical Center Ostomy Services. He has also been a guest speaker for the Public Relations Society of America on the topic of government communications.

“We are thrilled to welcome Joe Leathersich to the SUNY Geneseo College Council,” says Officer-in-Charge Mary C. Toale, EdD. “As an alumnus and dedicated public servant with deep experience in advocacy, intergovernmental relations, and public policy, Joe brings a wealth of insight and energy to our campus community. His commitment to service and his strong ties to the region will be invaluable as we continue to advance Geneseo’s mission. I look forward to working with him in support of our students, faculty, and staff as we welcome our incoming president, Melinda Treadwell, PhD, later this month.”

The College Council, established under New York State Education Law, serves as an advisory and oversight body for the College, with responsibilities that include recommending candidates for president, reviewing major plans and policies, and fostering strong connections between the College and the community.
