Campus Improvement Project Updates

SUNY Geneseo successfully secured funding for three multimillion-dollar campus improvement projects that will significantly improve services for our campus community. These major initiatives are funded by the State University Construction Fund (SUCF).

Status updates for each of the projects are below.

College Circle Infrastructure Project

October 11, 2022 Update

The estimated $10 million improvement project will provide a needed modernization of the infrastructure for that portion of the campus and includes new storm and sanitary sewers, domestic water supply, network infrastructure, and surface lighting. College Circle between Welles and Brodie Halls has not been upgraded in nearly 60 years.  In addition to the subsurface work, the project will result in broader driving lanes, enhanced crosswalks, expanded sidewalks, new retaining walls, benches, improved landscaping, and a new college directory. This project will be placed out for bid in October with construction being planned to start immediately after Commencement, May 2023.  The construction duration is expected to be 18 months.

Sturges Renovation

December 14, 2022 Update

It is a great pleasure to announce the start of the construction phase of the Sturge Hall Renovation project. It will launch shortly on or after December 21, 2022.  You will soon see construction fencing being installed around the perimeter of the building and construction of the project staging area on the south side of Sturges Hall. The stairway in between Sturges and College Union on the south end of those buildings will need to be closed for the duration of the construction project.

This prioritized project aligns with our campus master planning and will be the first major renovation of Sturges Hall since the building was constructed in 1938.  Sturges will experience a “gut renovation” which will remove all interior walls and utilities yet will preserve historical significance of items such as the auditorium, grand tower stairway, windows and clock.  Once renovated, Sturges will be the new home for the departments of Communications, Access Opportunity Programs (AOP), Title IX, Diversity Equity & Inclusion, Political Science & International Relations, and History.  In addition, the renovated building will have many new classrooms and collaboration spaces, a community health and counseling office, a tutoring center, a testing center and historically restored auditorium.  The budget is $35 million  and the project has a 2026 completion target.  The Finance and Administration Facilities Department, in collaboration with the Provost’s Office,  are grateful to partner with the State University Construction Fund  to continue to advance such projects for Geneseo in service to our campus community.

We will continue to appreciate your patience and support as we advance this and other major projects to benefit our students, faculty, and staff.
