Medical Response to Sexual Assault

The SUNY Geneseo Sexual Violence Response Policy defines sexual assault/violence is physical sexual act perpetrated against a person’s will or where a person is incapable of giving consent.

Immediate Medical Response Guidelines:

  1. Be Safe.
Ensure you are in a safe place. Call University Policy (585-245-5222) or 911 if off-campus. Consider asking a trusted person to be with you.
  2. Save Evidence.
Preserving as much evidence as possible means trying not to shower or bathe, eat, drink, smoke, or brush your teeth. Items that you were wearing at the time of the assault should not be washed and can be left on your body or if they have already been removed should be placed in a paper bag and brought to the emergency room or given to the police. Saving evidence now gives you the option to decide at a later date whether you would like to pursue charges.
  3. Seek Immediate Medical Treatment.
A medical exam is strongly advised in all case, particularly to check for injuries that may not be obvious/apparent. You can receive both general medical treatment and a forensic exam by going to the nearest emergency room. An emergency room can provide immediate testing as well as medications to prevent pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections (including HIV) if needed. Many of these medications are more effective the sooner they are started and become much less effective after 72 hours.

Additional Recommended Steps:

  1. Report the Assault.
This choice is always up to you, and it may be a complicated one. The campus Title IX Office can help talk through the process or answer questions on reporting that you may have. University Police can also assist with this process.
  2. Seek Additional Support.
Support after an assault is important. You may wish to connect with RESTORE Sexual Assault Services via their Livingston County hotline, 800-527-1757 (24/7), as they can provide an advocate if needed to assist through the legal process. Behavioral health services are also available from Counseling Services via walk in urgent care or scheduled appointments.
  3. Seek Additional Medical Care.
Many times, there is need for medical follow up after an assault. You can call 585-245-
5736 or visit My Health to schedule.
