Brooklyn May 2018
May Trip to Brooklyn, NY with Rebuilding Together: NYC
Travel Dates: Sunday, January 7- Saturday, January 13, 2018
Livingston CARES has been sending service trips to the Brooklyn/Staten Island/Long Island area since Hurricane Sandy in 2012. This week-long service trip consists mainly of home construction to repair the damage that still exists from Hurricane Sandy and damage from inexperienced contractors following the disaster. Participants on past trips have done everything from installing basement walls and hanging sheetrock to installing solar-powered lights outside homes to increase neighborhood safety and security. You will walk away from this trip with a better understanding of the wide range of damage caused by the hurricane and a host of new homebuilding skills that you learn under experienced supervision.
This trip works with Rebuilding Together: NYC, and their mission is to "transform the lives of low-income homeowners by improving the safety and health of their homes and revitalizing communities." This organization relies on the help of volunteers to complete tasks and provide as much assistance as possible to members of the NYC community. Their work falls within four main areas: Safe and Healthy Housing, Community Building, Economic Development, and Environmental Sustainability.
