March 16 Event to Help Prepare Students with Disabilities and Their Families for Life Transitions

South Hall

GENESEO, N.Y. -- The Ella Cline Shear School of Education at SUNY Geneseo and the Livingston County Community Service Board are co-sponsoring their biannual Transition Fair and Conference March 16 from 9-1 p.m. at the MacVittie Union Ballroom. The fair and conference welcomes school personnel, students with disabilities and their families preparing for transition from preschool to school-age programs or from high school to college, work or career readiness.

The event is free for all attendees and consists of both informational tables at the fair and in-depth information sessions via the conference. The fair will involve more than 15 agencies, programs, and organizations providing information and answering general questions geared to all ages of students preparing for transition.  Conference sessions will provide in-depth information on transition services and supports for students with disabilities preparing to transition to college, work or career readiness, their families, and school personnel.

“Transitioning to college or work is an important step for high school students with disabilities and their families,” said Annmarie Urso, associate professor of education at Geneseo. “There are so many excellent supports available from state agencies to private programs, along with funding mechanisms, that many of our students and families are unaware of.  The Transition Fair and Conference provides an opportunity for students and their families to learn about the many opportunities and supports available to them.  Additionally, young children with disabilities transitioning from preschool services to school age services provides another area in which families need information to understand the transitioning process so they can make informed decisions for their children.”

Agencies and organizations participating include the Livingston-Wyoming ARC; Adult Career and Continuing Education Services-Vocational Rehabilitation (ACCES-VR); New York State Education Department; College Internship Program Worldwide: Berkshire Program; Lagom Landing; Parent Center of Western New York; Learn Independence, Vocational, and Educational Skills (L.I.V.E.S.) Program at SUNY Geneseo; the Early Childhood Direction Center; Genesee Community College; NYS Office of Persons with Developmental Disabilities- including Integrated Employment Services; Livingston County Workforce Development; and Autism Services, Inc. Additionally, there will be a presentation by a faculty member in higher education on the academic support services available to students with disabilities in the college setting.

A detailed conference program, parking and lunch information will be provided following an RSVP to Annmarie Urso at transitionfair2017@gmail.com or 585-245-5468. Please RSVP by March 9.
