SUNY Geneseo has launched a new Music Education advisement track that will ready bachelor’s degree students in music to apply for the master of arts degree from the Eastman School of Music.

The Music Education program at Geneseo is an advisement track that prepares qualified students to pursue graduate work in music education. Developed in cooperation with the Eastman School of Music, students who successfully complete the music education track at Geneseo are eligible to apply to Eastman’s M.A. program in Music Education with Professional Certification. While the music education track at Geneseo prepares students specifically for admission to the Eastman School, the program is broadly designed to prepare students to meet general entrance requirements for most Masters’ programs in music education, and particularly those leading to professional certification in music education in New York State.

“Over the last many years, several of our graduates have gone on to earn their graduate degree at the Eastman School,” said Gerard Floriano ’84, director of choral activities and chair of the Department of Music. “This new cooperative arrangement is very exciting. Our students will be able to build upon the foundation of the College’s excellent undergraduate experience to then acquire specific professional skills and certification in music education at the graduate level, leading to a successful career in music education.

To qualify for the program, applicants will be expected to present a strong record of high school academic achievement and be accepted as a music major at Geneseo. During their junior year, students who have made successful progress toward their undergraduate degree will be recommended to Eastman’s music education program. Once accepted, rising seniors at Geneseo can get a “jump” on their music education graduate work by taking summer courses and one evening core course during the spring semester at Eastman.
