Maria Helena Lima
Professor of English
Maria Helena Lima (herself a Brazilian) has been teaching culture and literatures of the African Diaspora since 1992. Also the year Maria was hired by the State University of New York at Geneseo to teach courses on postcolonial literatures, Humanities, writing, and genre theory. In the spring of 2015, Professor Lima created and taught the first course on "Black Lives Matter" at Geneseo. Everyone on the trip will receive a copy of her bilingual edition of Afro-Brazilian short stories, Women Righting: Afro-Brazilian Women's Short Fiction (Mango, 2005), so everyone can be introduced to both Portuguese and Brazilian literature (a reading group of sorts if people are interested).
Melanie A. Medeiros
Assistant Professor of Anthropology
Melanie A. Medeiros has been a member of the faculty at the State University of New York at Geneseo since 2014. Professor Medeiros has been conducting ethnographic research in Bahia since 2006 and recently published some of her findings in her book Marriage, Divorce and Distress in Northeast Brazil: Black Women's Perspectives on Love, Respect and Kinship (Rutgers University Press, 2018). Medeiros has been taking Geneseo students to Bahia for the past four years.
