National Survey of Student Engagement 2020

What is NSSE?

NSSE is the National Survey of Student Engagement. It is an international, standardized survey given to first year and senior students. It is used by hundreds of colleges and universities in the United States and Canada. Here is a link to the NSSE website.

When will this survey be launched?

The NSSE will be launched February 17th, 2020. The last reminder email will be sent on March 17th, 2020. All first year students and seniors will receive an email inviting them to participate in the NSSE.  We’re asking that you try to encourage friends in any of your clubs, organizations, study groups and residence hall buddies that are first year students or seniors to take a few minutes and fill out the survey.  The college and college administration use this information to try to improve student life and the college curriculum, so please take the time to respond if you receive an invitation.

How long is this going to take?

The NSSE survey will take approximately 15 minutes to complete.

What kinds of questions does the NSSE survey ask?

NSSE asks questions about experiences & activities, relationships, the institutional environment, and a few demographic questions. It assesses students' involvement in their education and their school and what types of experiences schools are providing. NSSE evaluates students' educational experiences, the aspects of campus life offered, students' participation in campus life activities and diversity issues. It offers questions on areas of active and collaborative learning. NSSE also gives Geneseo an opportunity to evaluate its enriching educational experiences, such as practicum experience, internships, study abroad offerings, field experience, student teaching, etc.  The NSSE gives Geneseo the opportunity to gauge and possibly work to improve campus diversity and understanding.

Have we ever done the NSSE at SUNY Geneseo?

Yes, this will be our 10th time participating in the survey (we have participated in 2002, 2003, 2006, 2008, 2010, 2012, 2014 and 2017)! Our goal is to participate every three years going forward.
