Department of Music Minors

The SUNY Geneseo Department of Music offers academic minors in music, musical theatre, piano pedagogy and a concentration for education majors.

The course requirements for each minor are as follows:

Minor in Music

Total Credits: 23musical performance

  • MUSC 139, 140: Piano A and B (2 credits)
  • MUSC 189, 190: Elements and Musicianship 1 and 2(6 credits)
  • MUSC 226, 227: Music in Western Civilization 1 and 2 (6 credits)
  • MUSC 232 or 233: Folk Music in America or Introduction to Ethnomusicology (3 credits)
  • MUSC Electives (6 credits)
    • Two 3-credit music courses, which may not include MUSC 110 or 120; OR
    • One 3-credit music course, which may not include MUSC 110 or 120and a total of three semester of160/5 Performance Organization and/or three semesters of applied study

Minor in Musical Theatre

Total Credits: 25musical theatre

  • MUSC 182: Musicianship for Musical Theatre I (3 credits)
  • MUSC 222: Stage Musicals (3 credits)
  • MUSC 280: Musical Theatre Performance I (3 credits)
  • THEA 221: Acting I (3 credits)
  • THEA 224: Acting Techniques (2 credits)
  • THEA 320: Acting II (3 credits)
  • Voice requirement: chosen from the following (4 credits)
    • MUSC 141, 241, 341 Voice; OR
    • MUSC 151, 251, 351 Voice for the Performance Option
  • Dance requirement: chosen from the following, with at least 2 credits each (4 credits)
    • At the 200 or 300 level: MUSC 201; DANC 101-104; 201-204; 301-303

Minor in Piano Pedagogy*

Total Credits: 21-22piano

  • MUSC 189, 190: Elements and Musicianship 1 and 2 (6 credits)
  • MUSC 226, 227: Music in Western Civilization 1 and 2 (6 credits)
  • MUSC 240: Piano (two semesters)** (2 credits)
  • MUSC 340: Piano (two semesters) (2 credits)
  • MUSC 375: Piano Pedagogy (3 credits)
  • And one course selected from the following:
    • MUSC 256: Harmony I (3 credits)
    • MUSC 376: Piano Teaching Practicum (2 credits)
    • MUSC 393: Honors Project In Music (3 credits)
